Are my photos going to be posted to your website gallery?
Absolutely not. The photos on our website are local models. We do not post customer photos to our galleries for privacy reasons.

What about proofs?
Proofs will be available for viewing in a private password protected gallery on our website. We will email you a password to view your proofs.

What about wardrobe/shoes/props?
We do not provide wardrobe or shoes for our customers. We do have several set designs and props available but if you have something specific in mind please ask.

I actually had a great time with the retro pinup workshop I hosted. I think a most of the attendees really enjoyed themselves. That being said I didn't really shoot, just a few shots of Ashley whom I always love to shoot with. So I mist my second opportunity to shoot with Misty, it was getting to be annoying so when the opportunity came up to tag along on another shoot I just had to do it.

Despite the 2.5hr drive from Atlanta and the flat tire along the way, I made it (and I have new tires). So I wanted to include a shot or two, if you ever get the change to work with her you should.

So I am about to have a retro pinup style workshop and I wanted to provide a list of notes, ideas, and suggestions for a retro pinup shoot. So all though these are directed at a specific workshop I am holding here in Atlanta I decided to share it on the blog. I will also bring a couple issues of Retro Lovely magazine for ideas

Some workshop specific notes to attendees.

Some last minute items so to speak, first about the workshop itself. We will be talking and learning for the first hour or so as the models prepare.

Because this is a workshop and we know a lot of the people attending will have a diverse range of experience we will be instructing on Lighting, Poses, and general questions. We will also be on hand for 1 on 1 during the shooting with suggestions, lighting ideas, etc. Yes me may just randomly move your lights if we see anything boring; so we hope you ask us why.

We will have several areas setup, but it could be close quarters and we won't tolerate any paparazzi style shooting. I don't care if some is shooting ambient light, don't snipe shots or shoot over anyone else shoulder. The only time I want to see two photographers shooting the same thing is if one is shooting the other photographer working - a behind the shoot sort of thing is actually very cool, great time for anyone to play around with their cameras video functions.

We will also be asking people to move locations and rotate models on a regular basis, please don't monopolize anyone's times and realize that we don't want to have 5 photographers with the same shots of one model. Some of these models are there as TFP and some are paid, lets get them a wide variety of shots regardless. For that matter some will have non retro clothes as well with them if you just want to get some "modern" shots during the day.

I want to also add somethings about interacting with the models. Please respect their privacy and personal space, this can differ a lot based on people; models and photographers.

* Don't touch the model, if you see something wrong please ask them to fix it. If they are not getting it I would first suggest you see if a female is available, otherwise always ask before moving hair or fanning out a garment. Respect and professionalism is key, when in doubt I would remind you that models are, in fact, radio active.

* Its great to tell a model "perfect" or "hold that" or "lower your chin a little" and they often like to know they have the right pose as they can't see themselves. Personally in my home studio I have a full length mirror I keep behind me for just this reason (FREE TIP). Try to avoid to many excessive compliments or anything like "your so hot" and consider "you are looking great" or "these shots are amazing"

* Thank the models, let them see a few shots on the back of your camera, work slowly at first. Its important to build a working relationship and not simply bark commands. You shots will be better and he/she may have great ideas - if they feel comfortable enough to share and you are not dismissive with them.

I realize for many people this may appear obvious etiquette and it wasn't written to be condescending. Not everyone in our group is at the same level of experience with photography, models, studio lighting, and other elements of this workshop. Please everyone share your knowledge as much as you share your gear.

We will also have another experienced photographer present, Ed, who isn't part of our group to provide assistance. That should give everyone more resources as I know last time I ended up a little occupied with model and MUA questions.

Boudoir and Pinup Shoot the otherday

Well I was doing some trade shoot yesterday for couple of new models. One was more traditional Boudoir and the other turned into a retro pinup shoot. Yes I know I do a lot of retro pinup but this was different, we had originally planned to shoot on some old very rusted out 50's Chevy's being used for part cars. I have shot on them before and the owner doesn't mind us shooting on them. This time he noticed the model's red and black outfit and invited us to shoot with a restore car he had inside, with a red and black theme. Great looking car and the shots were just great.

I will try and have some more up after I process a few more, overall the shoot was a lot of fun and I think we could see more of this model in the future Boudoir Photographer

Retro Pinup Shoot

Well I shot a retro style pinup shoot on a 1930's train car and it was cool. OK, it ended up looking a bit more like old school Hollywood glamor, but it fit the setting very well. I noticed when I was at the location some very cool restored 1950's era buses. I think I will have to shoot again.

Choosing a consumer Digital SLR Camera

So you’re in the market for a new camera and don’t know where to start? Let’s start with the basics of DSLRs and modern photography. If you’re upgrading from a point and shoot or moving away from film you will approach the buying decision from different viewpoints. I will cover them separately.

Coming from a digital point and shoot you will probably first notice the much larger size and weight. There are some models available on a standard called 4/3s (four thirds) that are very compact but still give you all the features of a SLR system, but even these are larger than most point and shoots. Don’t think of this as a disadvantage, it’s the larger optics and image sensor that give you a better picture.

If you are converting from film to a DSLR you will probably first notice the smaller size and weight. Most consumer DSLRs are based on a “crop” or DX sensor, it’s about 60% of the size of 35mm film. This will be most noticeable with your lens; the focal length in proportion to the sense makes them appear longer then what you may be expecting. For example a 200mm will look more like a 300mm on the crop sensor digital, 200mm x 1.6 (60% sensor size) = 320mm. Keep this in mind when looking for lens, most digital users carry a 35mm in place of the trusted 55mm (35 x 1.6 = 56mm)

In common to both new buyers are megapixels, the sales people will be all over this one. Camera manufactures are constantly looking for ways to differentiate themselves and for a long time it has been megapixels. Don’t get caught in that trap, 6.1mp cameras were producing professional images for years before 8, 10, and 12mp cameras.

Given the same size sensor any increase in the number pixels will result in more pixels fighting over the same amount of light. Think about that for a minute. Many new cameras have a lowest ISO setting of 200. Without going into all the details of ISO (i.e. ASA or film speed) this means that more digital noise introduced into you images.

One of the major advantages to a DSLR camera is the interchangeable lenses. These are specific to the manufacture and it’s why we often say you are buying a “system” and not just a camera. If you stay in the hobby long enough you will end up with lenses, flashes, meters, and all sorts of accessories for your system. These will outlast you new camera body by a long shot, I have some Pentax K mount lens that are over 20 years old. Don’t let that scare you off, you don’t have to stick to one system forever – I don’t really shoot Pentax much anymore, but remember to look at all the other parts and accessories when you shopping around.

This article isn’t going to go into the details of all the brands and their entry level cameras. I will cover some of the major distinguishing differences. If you are coming from a point and shoot camera and want to continue to use the view screen to compose your shots, commonly called live view, you will notice a big difference in the brands. Currently in the beginning of 2010 each manufacture has taken a different approach to this, and if this is your main selection criteria you will notice right away. I really encourage you to use the viewfinder and consider live view an nice extra feature as it will really open up your options for choosing a camera.

The major brands in the US as of this writing are Canon, Nikon, Sony (Minolta), Olympus, and Pentax. Canon and Nikon are the leaders with Sony coming on strong. Each manufacture tries to distinguish itself in different ways:

Canon – Pushing HD video recording and still image quality, the default setting produce bright and colorful images. This can be adjusted if it doesn’t fit your tastes but is closest to the output of point and shoot models.

Nikon – Sports and action focused. Their default images are a bit more neutral, but again can be configured to you preferences.

Sony – Strong focus on Live View at generally lower prices. They are making a push for a better market share but go to a store and hold one; many people find the ergonomics difficult.

Olympus – The only major manufacturer focused on the 4/3 format, making for some very portable DSLRs. Their lens selection is as great as Canon or Nikon but what they do offer is very good and in the most common focal lengths.

Pentax – Focused on digital crop sensor cameras and a previous leader, they were a little late to digital and have been playing catch up for the past few years. Oddly enough they also offer a medium format professional system, but not a full frame 35mm digital. They also have some of the best prime lenses and by far the largest selection of lenses from the past 40+ years.

Any of these can produce great images; it’s all a matter of deciding what features are important to you. If you’re unsure or still new to photography you may find you needs are different then what you expected. The major manufactures offer room for growth, so don’t worry too much about it. Try not to over spend until you are sure it’s the system for you.

So, you’re thinking about having Boudoir Photographs done but don’t know where to start?

Many people have considered having boudoir photographs taken but are not sure where to start or what to expect. “Boudoir”, once a term meant for a lady’s dressing room, when used in regards to photography usually involves sensual images taken of ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes. Boudoir photographs are gaining popularity as many couples find themselves separated by work or deployment; or are simply searching for a way to “spice things up” in their relationship. Boudoir photographs can also be a sexy surprise for a birthday or other special occasion. Many couples like to have Boudoir photographs taken together as well.

First, you should find a photographer that you are comfortable with. An experienced photographer will meet with you first to discuss what types of photographs you are interested in. You might need to interview several photographers before you find the right fit for you. Many photographers display online portfolios using professional models for these types of photographs, as most people are not comfortable with using their personal photos online. Ask your photographer to see samples of their work with other clients. Often they will have a traditional portfolio book for you to look through.

Things to keep in mind when looking for a photographer:
• Be comfortable with the photographer
• Communication is key, explain what you like and don’t like about yourself (a good photographer can use lighting and camera angles to get the best photos from your session)
• Is there a good variety in the photographer’s portfolio?
• Is there a professional makeup artist available? (there could be an additional cost for this service)
• Creativity
• Collaboration during the process

Finding a photographer is only half of the process. You also need to decide what type of photographs you want to have taken. Boudoir photographs can be varied to fit your comfort level. Traditionally women have had boudoir photographs taken dressed in lingerie in a bedroom. Nowadays, the client can choose to do a racy Playboy centerfold style shoot or can choose a more modest style while still creating sensual works of art for her partner. Expect to spend some time shooting as it will most likely take time for you to become comfortable.

Things to keep in mind for your first photo session:
• Wear loose clothes the day of your session to avoid clothing marks on you. Professional models usually avoid any clothing (such as bras or panties) that leave strap or elastic marks on their skin on the day of a photo shoot.
• Have a robe handy in case you are feeling nervous
• Be communicative, tell them what you do and don’t like

I hope this article has been informative and encourages you to find a photographer and setup an appointment right away. Don’t regret not doing something just because you’re a little nervous.

Obsesed with Soft Light

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of photography. The word photography is derived from the Greek works for light and write, so that may tell you how important it is. I believe lighting is photography; it defines the shot and sets the tone, it should invoke a feeling and inspire thought.

There are really no bad lighting techniques. You could easily say that on-camera flash should never be used; it creates harsh shadows and a flat look. Frankly it looks like a mug shot. What if you want your shot to look like mug shot?

These days everyone says you have to use a softbox and every photographer I see has a least one. But what exactly is a "soft" light and why is it required? Soft light is more about the effect of the light in images and not about the actual light source. A light is generally considered soft when there are no harsh shadows or sharp contrasts. This soft light effect can be created with a softbox or some other diffuser like an umbrella or a wall, but it could also be created by a light source much larger than the subject. Even a harsh light can appear soft in a picture if it is significantly larger than the subject. A softbox isn't always needed and you do not need to stick one on your light like it's a tripod, don not feel any piece of equipment is required other then the photographer and camera.

There are times when you want to present a dramatic statement with your photograph and you should consider all lighting ideas. How about direct flash, sunlight from behind the subject, light from below? Never? Most any new photographer will have learned that you should never do these things. I recall my teachers covered it very early, but have you tried it?

A silhouette done well can be impressive and I have seen some great shots with several speed lights hidden below the subject. Don't believe that you have to shoot any picture in a specific way. Don't get too hung up on the rules until you break them a few times. Go out and try different lighting and see what it can (and can't) do for you.

Photoshop is vital to your digital photography

The next in line is a list of four tools that provide ways for the user to fix problems in images. The Spot Healing Brush tool first appeared in Adobe Elements 3. It was implemented into Adobe Photoshop CS2 after that. This tool allows you to fix areas of an image by replacing or blending the colors in an area so that it is like growing a new piece of skin over a bad rash. The Healing Brush tool allows you to fix problems in the image by sampling the surrounding area around the problem and trying to replicate the pattern in the area that is problematic. The patch tool is pretty much a mix of the Healing Brush and the Lasso tool. It is allows you to highlight the area that is scratched or empty and sample the surrounding area to fix the problem. Lastly, the Redeye tool allows you to select the common problem of red eyes and correct them with sampling a piece of the black pupil area and replacing the red eye with the natural pupil color. This is a widely used tool by many consumers.

The next feature is the three types of Eraser tools. The most basic is the Eraser tool itself. You can change the size of the area that the eraser returns to the original background. The Background Eraser Tool does exactly what it states. It is able to erase the background without any use of changing layers. Once you have done this you can add in colors to make a new background at will. The Magic Eraser tool acts like the Magic Wand tool. It will erase an area based how it is clicked and verified.

Oddly enough, three more features that were previously hidden to the human eye are now available for you to view on the left menu. This time though the names have almost nothing to do with what they do. First up is the Dodge tool. This tool lightens an area on the image. The Burn tool darkens an area on the image and the Sponge tool changes the level of saturation on an area in the image. These all have their special purposes that you will come to find out about. Burn and Dodge are usually used for making shadows or erasing shadows.

The next tools are the Type tools. They specifically describe the Horizontal Type tool and the Vertical Type tool. These pertain to the angle that you are able to write in (Horizontal or Vertical). Unfortunately, when you use this you must turn it into a bitmap and that makes it non-editable after you are finished. The Horizontal and Vertical Type Mask tool allows you to write with text that is filled with a patter or an image as the font color. It can be a nice addition if you are writing against an odd background.

Below these more popular features are some cool features that you may or may not find interesting. I believe these have been in all the Adobe CS releases, but I am not sure about the Macromedia MX series. The first up is the Notes tool that allows you to add small notes to your images in the background. Also there is an Audio Annotation tool that allows you to add verbal notes to an image.

I forgot to mention that each of these features has its sub-features displayed at the top of the program when you click on them. You have probably noticed by now though. By now you have gained enough knowledge of the Adobe Photoshop CS3 basic features to jump in and start creating your own stuff. You will be able to find further information on each of these features in use with illustrations soon. I can tell you this because I am writing them right now. I believe the visitor will take from you if they can look at one person and know what type of information he is giving rather than it coming from a million different people that may or may not know how to effectively write information to people. There are easy to use step by step guides on how to use every feature on Photoshop so you can start making pictures and design graphics that look like they've come right out of a magazine. You can get started by learning the basics like removing red eyes, creating 3D effects logo techniques (text swoosh) etc. Learning Photoshop in a couple hours is definitely a possibility. It won't take you that much time to view the tutorials and apply them, but as with everything practice makes perfect and this is no different. Once you learn how to use Photoshop it will only be a matter of time before you become an expert.

I created this so that I could pass along my thoughts on different photography topics. I am not sure what exactly that will involve just yet, but more communications is never a bad idea
